George Washington’s Still, 1797

In 1799 workers at George Washington’s plantation used this still to make over 11,000 gallons of whiskey. Washington tried to move into the market economy by turning the corn and rye grown on his plantation into whiskey. Like many farmers, Washington looked for ways to increase the value of his crops.
