Mary Kay Cosmetics, 1960s

American women found new opportunities in the business world by establishing cosmetic and hair care companies such as those founded by Elizabeth Arden, Madame C. J. Walker, Harriet Ayer, Estee Lauder, Hazel Bishop, Helena Rubinstein, and Mary Kay Ash.  Ash established her direct sales company, Mary Kay, Inc. in 1963 by empowering women to become independent beauty consultants selling in their homes.  Sales success was recognized by company gifts of pink Cadillacs, luxury vacations, and beautiful jewelry.   Mary Kay’s focus on basic skin care and a pink pallet appealed to the 1960 baby boomer.
